2024 Victorian Open Racquetball Championships

Published Mon 29 Apr 2024

The first tournament of the 2024 National Racquetball circuit was the Victorian Open Championships hosted by the Mountain District Squash & Racquetball club on 20th – 21st  April. The tournament was to be the inaugural event at the brand new Victorian Racket Club in Knoxfield, but a last minute technical issue blocked the issuing of the building certificate for the new centre.  At the last minute, Genesis allowed the tournament to played at last years venue. Very generous considering the club had already flagged they will be moving to the new centre next pennant season. Numbers were at the maximum with 61 singles and 66 doubles entries, any more entries and we would of struggled to fit the matches into the time available.

We had very strong fields in both the Men’s and Woman’s Open.  The Men’s event saw Cam White and Sam Ejtemai playing off in an entertaining and brutal final, with Cam once again coming out on top, but Sam seriously pushed Cam and it was much closer than their last meeting at the Oz Open last year. In the Woman’s event, Sarah Cardwell, PSA ranked squash player, played her first ever racquetball tournament and edged out Selena Shaikh in three long, grueling games lasting over an hour and a half. So the large gallery was treated to some of the best racquetball seen for some time.

The Open doubles had one of the strongest Open fields for some time, with Sarah Cardwell pairing with Alex Baines showing her great fitness level, backing up after the long final the day before. They took out the final out over Ryan McCarter and David Bolger in another long, entertaining final.

Once again thanks to the MDS&R club for a well organised event and great canteen.
